Assessment Rolls and Tax Lists
Assessment rolls and tax lists are an alphabetical list of property owners in Jefferson County showing land or personal property owned and the taxes assessed and paid on that property. They generally indicate a property owner's name, legal description of land or town lot owned, assessed value of land, assessed value of improvements on the land (but no indication of what the improvements were), total property tax assessed and the amount of taxes apportioned to state, county, town and school district. Books for later years list tax levy and revenue information.
1866 is surnames L-Z only, as A-K are missing. Assessment rolls dated 1871-1893 show the number and assessed value of personal property such as animals, clocks and watches, musical instruments, carriages, etc. From 1928 to 1936, taxes on automobiles were recorded in special volumes that list the person's name, address, year and make of automobile owned, its valuation, and the amount of tax and date it was paid.
Taxes levied for the Moffat Tunnel district are recorded in separate volumes from 1928 to 1941.
Assessment rolls and tax lists can be used to trace when an individual was in Jefferson County and where their property was located, how much property they owned, what kind of car they drove, approximate date a school district was created, dates a business was operating, and much more. (1869 and 1895 missing.)
